February 24, 2008 The formal season came to an end with three Dons coming within one win of achieving All-American status. Drew Simmons, Colin Schuster, and Brian Frantz all made good runs in the tournament but came up a little short.

The official end of the season however is the banquet on March 3. Check the forum for details.

All should be aware that there is plenty of wrestling in the offseason to stay involved with> details on clubs and camps and tournaments will be available all offseason on the forum.

February 16, 2008 It was an extremely long weekend for Loyola Wrestlers. The State Tournament at McDonogh saw the Dons place 9th overall with 98 team points. As with the MIAA tournament as a team we not able to put our best squad forward as our 103 (Billy Youngblood), 112 (Kevin Frantz), 119 (Mike Zito), 152 (Matt Hnatiuk) were out with injuries. Despite this four Dons placed in the tournament led by senior Danny Smith, who had a terrific tournament and placed second after being seeded 6th. Loyola also had two fourth place finishers in Colin Schuster and Brian Frantz, who both placed for the first time at states. First year wrestler Doug Shaw also placed 6th at the tournament. All placers earned a ticket next weekend to Lehigh University and the National Prep Tournament.

Over the course of the season several team records were set. Colin Schuster and Brian Frantz both went over the 100 win level and Brian Frantz and Doug Shaw both surpassed the 24 total pins for year level. Doug Shaw has a remarkable 30 pins among his 39 wins for the year. Colin Schuster has exceeded Owen Duffy's record of total team points for the year with a current 265.

Beyond our wrestlers success on the mat on Friday and Saturday was the success of hosting the 5th annual MSWA State Age Weight Championships on Sunday. The entire program pitched in as Middle School and JV coaches and wrestlers set up Friday and Saturday and manned tables during the event. Our parents and volunteers were tireless in their efforts to showcase Loyola and the program we are trying to build. Special thanks have to go out to Rea Weiss and Mike Zito for their efforts. There commitment and efforts were above and beyond.

February 10, 2008 The MIAA tornament ended on an overall down note for the Dons who failed to exceed their seed in almost every circumstance. There were two brightspots on teh day however as the Loyola Heavyweights continiued to ake noise. Drew Simmons lost his finals match with McDonough's Doug Schenk in a match that was much closer than the final 11-2 score. Heavyweight Doug Shaw continued an impressive rookie campaign with a pin of the MMM champ Lane Clelland, and a consolation final win over state runner up Anthony Powell of Curley,

February 8, 2008 The end of the first day of the MIAA tournament finds four Dons in the semi-finals. Brian Frantz, Colin Schuster, who earned his 100th win, Brian Wenger, and Drew Simmons all are one win away from the finals.

February 6, 2008 During the Brawl with the Hall Loyola pulled out the slimmest of wins with a 33-32 win. The last dual meet of the season saw the Dons final record stand at 17-6. Loyola is also ranked No. 19 in the Digital Sports/MSWA state wide poll.

February 3, 2008 The teams' Flow Wrestling site now has a collection of photos and video of this year's matches. Because the service is free and private as a team we will store our video's and pictures on the site. Remember, parents and fans can upload their videos and pictures to the site as well.

February 2, 2008 Loyola split two league dual meets in the past week. First up was Gilman on Senior night. Led by the lineup of seniors, Brian Frantz, Danny Smith, Joe Dinatale, and Brain Wenger the Dons defeated the Greyhounds 48-20. Three days later however Loyola faced the second place and No. 6 ranked Curley Friarsand lost 40-25. WIth one dual meet left against Calvert Hall, Loyola stands 15-6, and 4-3 in the MIAA A conference.

January 27, 2008 Coach Truitt made the point after a close loss to Dematha on the fifth scoring criteria(total first points scored) that 'every point matters'. That was certainly the case today on the second day of the Arundel Duals. The day started off with Loyola in the championship bracket defeating Yorktown of Virginia 45-24. That set up a quarterfinal match up with private school rival Dematha.

The match started off well as John Cole got a decision, but then the see-sawing began as Loyola lost three of the next four matches to fall into a 7-12 hole. Then a decision by the newly healed Cameron Miller brought the Dons to within 10-12. A close 2-1 loss by Tony Alongi-Huslig followed to put the score at 10-15. Then senior captain Danny Smith secured a third period period pin to give Loyola their third lead of the day 16-15. However knowing that we were without our 103 and 112lb wrestlers due to illness we needed to have a lead of at least 13 going into the last three matches. Dematha's 189lb wrestler Mike Aguggia was ranked No 1 in the state and looked like a sure six points for the Stags. They bumped him up a weight class, and immediately lost six points as senior Brian Wenger pinned his backup and then lost another three as Drew Simmons fought Aguggia off and yielded only a decision. Loyola led then 22-19, and added to it with Doug Shaw's twenty third pin of the season to make it 28-19 going into the last three matches. Following the forfeits Loyola trailed 28-31 and it was all up to freshman Mike Zito.

Needing a major decision to win Mike attacked throughout the match but fell just short of a major with a 7-2 match tying decision. After a lengthy conference at the scorer's table between coaches, officials, scorekeepers, and the scorebook it was determined that on the fifth tie breaking criteria (total of first points scored 10-14) Dematha had prevailed.

The following semi-final match with Baltimore County champ Hereford was similarly close. Once again Loyola had to spot the opponent 12 points due to ill wrestlers. Following two close losses of 2-6 and 12-14 by Forward and Brian Frantz, Loyola evened the score with a Moreno pin at 140. Hereford's two county champs in Fouts and Keil waited at 145 and 152. WIth out our starting 152 pounders Loyola gambled on a match-up with Shuster and Keil which Hereford avoided and the two match swing ended up with Loyola trailing 9-12. Tony Huslig evened the score at twelve all with a decision, but then a another top ranked wrestler in three time state champ Josh Asper waited for Danny Smith who lost a 0-15 technical decision. His whose fight again saved a valuable team point. Two pins and a loss by decision had Loyola again going into the empty 103-112 weight classes with lead only to see it disappear. Freshman Zito and John Cole faced an 8 point deficit that had to be made up, The two wrestlers need a pin and a decision to win and could manage only a pin and a 7-9 loss. Final score 35-30 Hereford.

January 25, 2008 In the first round of the Arundel Duals Loyola took care of business going 4-0. Loyola beat Winston Churchill 51-18, Tabb (Virginia, at one point the No. 8 team in Va) 39-25, Lansdown 48-27, and MIAA A conferance rival Spalding 50-14.

Achieving individual milestones for the day were Mike Zito, Gus Moreno, Tony Alongi-Huslig, who all went over 20 wins for the season. Colin Schuster improved his record to 32-0 for the season.

January 23, 2008 Loyola defeated Boys' Latin 43-25 last night to move to 10-3 on the season.

January 18, 2008. On a day when most eyes were on the Mount Mat Madness tournament Loyola took care of business at home in a tri-meet with Broadneck and Pallottti. The Dons won both matches handily thanks to a number of wrestlers getting two wins on the night. The results are Digital Sports are linked to on the left.

January 12 2008 After a long day of wrestling in a quad meet with WInters Mill, Good Council, and MIAA rival John Carroll Loyola emerged 2-1 on the day and improved their dual meet record to 7-3. A very good showing by the Dons who ended the day in many cases wrapped in ice, but full of pizza thanks to Mrs. Wenger and the ever supportive parents of the wrestlers.

There will be no practive monday to give you all a chance to heal, and study for your exams. Wrestling will pick up again on Tuesday.

January 11th 2008 Loyola improves to 5-2 on the year with wins over Arundel and Meade in tonight's tri meet.

Both Brian Frantz and Doug Shaw gained their twentieth wins of the year to join Colin Schuster in that regard.

Additionally the correction has been made to schedule for tomorrow's quad meet. It will be held at Loyola. Loyola's first match is at 10:00 am.

January 6, 2008 The first ever Falcon Invitational tournament at Winters Mill High School saw Loyola in action again and this time the newly No 6 ranked Dons finished in third place. Loyola entered the tournament without three starters and still made an impressive showing as they placed five wrestlers in the finals.

Along with the finalists four other Dons placed third and fourth in the tournament that saw the Dons amass 254 team points in the unique round robin format.

Brian Frantz, Colin Schuster, Danny Smith, Tony Alongi-Huslig, and Doug Shaw all were finalists with Frantz, Schuster and Shaw winning championships. Shaw and Frantz both pinned their way through the tournament to win their first individual titles. Junior Colin Schuster who improved his record to 21-0 on the season was voted the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.

For the middle school wrestlers their schedule can now be found on the same page as the varsity and junior varsity wrestling schedules.

December 29, 2007 At the very competitive Arundel Holiday tournament Loyola finished tied with Dematha for 2nd. It was a strong team effort led by Colin Schuster's championship at 145lbs. The Dons entered fourteen wrestlers in the tournament and had nine placers. Senior Danny Smith and junior Doug Shaw were also finalists. As in tournaments past the team depended on overall team depth as the Dons had five wrestlers wrestle back for third and fourth places. Several teams in the tournament were ranked in the state by the MSWA, including the Dons who were ranked No. 19. Loyola placed higher than Stephen Decatur (No. 5) and tied for second with Dematha (No. 3). Curley the No. 12 team in the state finished first.

And although the webmaster has been negligent of late the stories about the Don's this year have been linked on the right under headlines.

December 21, 2007 Sophomores lead the Dons to two victories tonight over Annapolis Area Christian, and Liberty High Schools. Sophomores Gus Moreno and Kevin Frantz each had two pins , and along with Colin Regan and Drew Simmons twin pins the Dons defeated AACS 63-6, and Liberty 45-22.

December 20, 2007 Loyola splits with St. Mary's and Mount St. Joe in it's first tri-meet of the year. In the opening match Loyola lost to the Gaels 27-47. In the nightcap the Dons defeated the Saints of St. Mary's 45-33. In the two matches the Dons were led by their three captains, Brian Frantz, Colin Schuster, and Danny Smith who accounted for six wins on the night.

December 15, 2007 Led by Colin Schuster's third consecutive BIG 20 championship, Loyola placed 4th in the Baltimore County tournament. Leading after the first day of the tournament Loyola managed to place 10 of it's 13 wrestlers, including finalists Mike Zito (119), Brian Frantz (135), Gus Moreno (145), and Doug Shaw (285).Loyola finished behind tournament champ Georgtown Prep, and runner up North Carroll, and New Jersey's Wall Township.

Digital Sports and the state's premier wrestling reporter have ranked Loyola number 10 in the state in their initial poll. you can find the poll here. In the poll are several teams Loyola will be facing this year including next weeks Mount St. Joe #2, and St. Mary's #18. Other ranked teams that we will be facing this year include Mcdonough #1, John Carroll #5, Curley #6, Hereford #7, Calvert Hall #15, Winters Mill #19 and Boy's Latin, #20.

December 10, 2007 Loyola rolled to it's third consecutive Parkville Tournament championship over the weekend. In past years Loyola has relied on individual champions to win the tournament, but this year was different. Relying on a team effort that saw eleven of thirteen entered wrestlers place, Loyola led by junior Colin Schuster, a three time Parkville champion, amassed 249 team points to outdistance runner up Owings Mills. Six of Loyola's wrestlers were competing in their first varsity tournament.

On a more universal note the Baltimore Sun, the paper of record for the Baltimore Metro area, has decided to stop publishing the wrestling box scores in the sports section of the print newspaper. They will only print basketball box scores. While box scores will still be provided in the online version of the paper this development is a serious blow to the wrestling community, which already has seen its local coverage dry up. I urge you to write or email to Mr. Glen Graham, sports reporter, of the Baltimore Sun, and to Mr. Paul Moore, Public Editor of the Baltimore Sun and urge them to continue to provide this coverage of our sport.

November 27, 2007 This Thursday the 29th Loyola will be attending a scrimmage with Dulaney High School. The team will be leaving Loyola at 4:00 for the scrimmage and practice with the Lions.
