Long First week of the Month
02/February/2011
The first week of the month has been a busy one for the Dons. Monday the 31 of January the Dons traveled down to Archbishop Spalding to visit the number one team in the state and in a very tough match Loyola learned why the Cavaliers are the top dog in the state as the DOns went down hard on the short end of a 61-3 score. Sophomore David Mohler however was a bright spot as he defeated number three Michael Still in the Dons lone win of the evening.
Wednesday night the Dons were hosts to the number 8 Mount St. Joe Gaels-- a team that Loyola has beaten once in the past two decades. It would be no different that night as the Gaels edged the Dons 30-42.
Friday night was Senior Night at Loyola and we played host to the Defending MPSSAA champion Reservoir Gators of Howard County. Before the match started there was a brief ceremony when Coach Truitt honored the four Loyola Seniors on this year's team. Mike ZIto, Brad Randall, Colin Marshall, and Billy Youngblood all greeted their parents on the mat and received the recognition they deserved for their years of hard work on the mats. The match itself was nail biter that came down to the 215 match where senior Colin Marshall sealed the win with a win. Final Score was 42-30.
However there was to be no rest for the team as wrestling from every level of the school would take place on Saturday. First up was the previously postponed match with arch rival Calvert Hall. The Dons visited the Cardinals on their senior night and dealt them a 56-27 loss. This year's seniors have never lost to Calvert Hall.
On Saturday as well the JV competed in the Curley Invitational-- the putative MIAA JV Championship, and although team scores were not kept the Dons did extremely well with the following wrestlers placing:
112 Mike Mangione 3rd
119 Patrick Smist 3rd
125 Max Weber 6th
135 Bobby Marlow 6th
140 Sean Dougherty 6th
145 Peter Corey 3rd
152 Ekene Nkem-MMekam 3rd
189 Neil Amaral 1st
189 John Edwards 3rd
215 Jordan Jenkins 1st
215 Connor Henderson 2nd
The Loyola Middle School team was also competing in their championship at the St. Paul's School. The results of those matches will be posted soon.
