Loyola Wrestling in the 2008-2009 Season
February 24, 2009 Loyola's wrestling reason ended at the National Prep Tournament in Lehigh with Colin Schuster placing fifth at 152lbs and earning All-American Honors. Loyola took six wrestler up to the prep tournament and earned a team finish of 30th place of the 129 teams entered.
The week also saw the release of several state wrestling polls with Loyola highly ranked. Baltimore Sun February 17 2009 has Loyola 13th. The Maryland State Wrestling Association has Loyola ranked as Honorable Mention, and 9th in the Baltimore Metro area.
This Thursday evening we will hold our annual wrestling banquet in the dining hall at 6:00. The cost is $10 per person payable before hand to Coach Truitt or at the door.
February 18, 2009 Loyola finished in 7th place in the State Championship at McDonogh last weekend and in many ways did better than many past Loyola teams. Loyola had two finalists in Gus Moreno at 160lbs and Doug Shaw at 285. Although neither placed first it was the first time Loyola had two finalists in the same year. It also marks the first time Loyola will have a returning state finalists in it's lineup next year with Gus Moreno. Loyola's other placers were Mike Zito 5th, Kevin Frantz 6th, Tony Alongi Huslig 4th, Drew Simmons 6th. Freshman Colin Miller also had a great tournament and wrestled back to place 8th. Matt Hnatiuk, wrestling in the most difficult weight class of the year placed 7th and became an alternate for this weekend's National Prep Tournament in Lehigh.
February 9, 2009 The 2009 MIAA tournament saw Loyola hitting its stride again after rocky stretch at Mount Mat Madness and the Arundel Duals. Although still not competing with an injured Ben Smist Loyola wrestled their way to their highest MIAA finish ever. The third place Dons were led by their two senior captains Drew Simmons and Colin Schuster who both made their way into the finals. Simmons and Schuster were just two of the ten Dons who placed in the tournament. Also placing at sixth were Ellis Kent, Kevin Frantz, Gus Moreno, Matt Hnatiuk. Will Flynn placed fifth while Doug Shaw, Tony Alongi-Huslig, and Mike Zito all placed 3rd. The 3rd place team finish was the highest for the ever in the Dons in the MIAA and highest league placement since a second place finish in the MSA in 1992.
This coming Friday and Saturday Loyola will be at McDonogh competing in the MIS championships. Placers in this tournament will be eligible to wrestle in the National Prep tournament at Lehigh the following week.
A reminder to all wrestlers that the day after the state tournament Loyola is hosting the MSWA qualifying tournament. All wrestlers are expected to attend and work. Your support of the middle school wrestlers who will be competing in the event is also appreciated.
February 4, 2009 Loyola finished the dual meet season with a visit to rival Calvert Hall on their senior night. After a nice presentation that honored seniors on both teams the Dons ran away with a 53-24 victory. This weekend is the MIAA tournament at Mount St. Joe. Returning to the lineup after recovering from an injury were senior captains Colin Schuster and Drew Simmons.
Loyola finished the season with a dual meet record of 15-11.
January 29, 2009 In a match delayed two days for snow Loyola went to Gilman and came away with a 42-25 MIAA A conference win. In a gritty performance on the eve of the tough Arundel Duals this weekend seniors, Shaw, Huslig, Regan, Pries all came away with wins.
January 23, 2009 Boys' Latin visited Loyola for senior night and the Don seniors performed in their last home dual in fine fashion. Seniors Colin Regan, Shannon Klein, Tony Alongi-Huslig, Drew Simmons, Doug Shaw, Ben Hildebrand, Liam Pries led Loyola to a 51-22 win over the visiting Lakers.
January 20, 2009 In the toughest tournament Loyola has been in so far they finished an injury marred 24th. The season goes on though and this Friday night finds the Dons on the mat against the Lakers of Boys' Latin on senior night.
January 11, 2009 There must be something about New Jersey wrestling and Loyola finishing second. In the Big 20 tournament it was Wall township taking first ahead of Loyola and in this weekends Iron Horse Duals at C Milton Wright high school it was St. Benedicts Prep that edged Loyola for first place. Loyola wrestled well over the weekend and ran their dual meet record to 9-6, but lost a hard fought match in the finals with the Newark prep school 26-45.
January 3, 2009 The new year saw the Dons in yet another tough tournament this time the 30th annual Arundel Holiday tournament. Over a long weekend of wrestling some of the best instate and Virginia competition Loyola finished in fifth place. The Dons had three finalists in Gus Moreno, Drew Simmons and Doug Shaw. Shaw won his finals match in overtime and ran his record to 12-2.
The weekend was also very successful for the Loyola JV squad who crowned two champions. TJ Robinson, Collin Marshall, finished first while Tony Frieji, Longte Kuptong, and Luke LLardo all finished in the top four.
December 28, 2008 Entered into the 2nd annual McDonogh duals Loyola ran into some very stiff competition. Although the Dons won their pool competition the fell in three straight duals to Poquoson (ranked third in Virginia AA) of Virginia, McDonogh (again), and eventual tournament winner Spring Grove of Pennsylvania (defending York-Adams League Division I champion). In a very exciting final match the Dons charged back to briefly take a four point lead with two matches to go on the tournament champs only to drop the final two matches and finish up at 3-4 in dual meets so far this year. Two bright spots on the day of wrestling were captains Colin Schuster, and Drew Simmons who both went 5-0 on the day with six pins between them.
Next up this weekend is the always competitive Arundel Holiday Tournament. Loyola finished second there last year and is looking forward to winning it this year.
December 20, 2008 In a tournament that saw an undermanned Loyola squad again competing with four freshman on it's roster, Loyola held off third place Hereford to finish second behind Wall Township of New Jersey. Loyola had four finalists and champions at 152, Colin Schuster, 160 Gus Moreno and 285 Doug Shaw. Tony Alongi-Huslig lost a narrow 3-2 match in the finals. Colin Schuster in winning his fourth Big 20 championship was named the tournament Outstanding Middleweight Wrestler. Doug Shaw was named the Outstanding Heavyweight wrestler.
December 17, 2008 Despite a furious comeback from a 31-4 deficit the Dons came up 6 points short of the Friars in a dual meet last night. The Dons run began with Colin Schuster's pin at 152, followed by pins by Gus Moreno, TJ Robinson, a decision by Tony Huslig and a match tying pin by 215 Drew Simmons. This set up the 285 match between Doug Shaw and Tony Powell. After a see-saw first two periods Powell got the pin and the Friars escaped from Loyola's gym with a 37-31 win.
December 11, 2008 Loyola lost to Mcdonogh 33-31 last night at Mcdonogh. The match started at 145 and see sawed back and forth until the final two matches of the night when the Eagles earned a tech fall and a pin to come from behind and win. Congratulations also to Doug Shaw who was named to the first team All-Metro Football team. It is his second first team All-Metro pick.
December 7, 2008 Loyola began the first week of the season with a dual meet victory over A conference rival St. Mary's and repeated as Parkville Invitational Tournament champions. In the Parkville tournament senior Colin Schuster won his fourth Parkville tournament crown. Also placing first for Loyola were Mike Zito, Cameron Miller, Gus Moreno, Matt Hnatiuk, and Tony Alongi-Huslig. Loyola won the tournament despite not having senior captain Drew Simmons, and heavyweight Doug Shaw who were playing in the Baltimore Touchdown Club All-star game.
The tournament showing also helped Loyola move up from 13 to 11 in the Digital Sports Metro Area Poll.
